Helicopters and airplanes-often converted military aircraft-dump water and fire-retardant chemicals. Smokejumpers-firefighting's adrenaline junkies-dive out of airplanes to land in otherwise inaccessible areas. #Tinderbox rapid city sd professionalOn the front lines, professional firefighters from government agencies-sometimes helped by local residents, prison inmates, military personnel, and, increasingly, private contractors-battle the blaze, felling trees, clearing brush and moving dirt to create firebreaks. I know: I've been doing it for 26 years, most of my adult life. I'm not ashamed to admit I have tears in my eyes as I walk the path along the memorial.įighting forest fires is like fighting a war. So far this year, eight firefighters have died. The wildland fire community is still reeling from 1994, when 34 of our firefighters died, 14 in one fire in Colorado alone. Every year, some succumb to the risks of what we do, whether from being overrun by flames, or by accident in the air or on the ground. The memorial also has markers commemorating firefighters who have died in the line of duty. It is the environment in which we wildland firefighters work. The memorial includes three statues of wildland firefighters holding the tools of their trade-a Pulaski (a combination mattock and ax), chain saw and shovel-in a setting of native trees and grasses. The Wildland Firefighter Monument is located right behind the National Interagency Fire Center headquarters building where I have been working. Still, there are poignant reminders nearby of fire's power and its potential for destruction. This year, there are no forest fires close to us, though at times Boise is hazy with smoke from distant fires. I look forward to many years of working together.Six years ago, the last time I was here as part of a behind-the-scenes team directing the work of firefighters in the field, you could see several columns of smoke from the airport and from many parts of the city.
